The Nazarene movement began in Vienna in the early Nineteenth-Century when a group of German artists became disillusioned with the Neo-Classical style being taught in the academy there. They sought to restore spirituality and honest emotion in their work. The influence of the Nazarene School can be seen in the Pre- Raphaelite movement and more broadly throughout European Romantic painting.This scene, from the Book of Genesis, shows the moment that Ishmael is given water to drink by his mother Hagar.
