A group of four medals comprising Companion of the Order of the Bath, Military Division, Gazette p6898, 25/7/1905. Queen's South Africa Medal with Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Laing's Nek, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps, King's South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 and 1902 clasps. The Prussian Order of the Red Eagle with a letter from Buckingham Palace dated November 1911 "I have the honour to inform you that The King has been graciously pleased to give you Private Permission to wear the insignia of the Order of the Red Eagle, which was conferred upon you by the German Emperor and King of Prussia. The first two named to Lt. Col. George Limbrey Basing, 1st Royal Dragoons. The recipient is recorded as commanding a column in 1901-2, mentioned in dispatches twice. A quantity of related items including a Dutch Bible printed in 1882 with a paper label 'picked up at the Battlefield 1900' a further note stating that this was at a Battlefield at the Relief of Ladysmith. 'Marked Testament, South Africa 1900' given to every officer when he went out to the Boer war. A 1 Pond Gold coin, 1893, in green enamel mount 'Given by Serg. Cornwall (?) during the Boer War, Three bullet cases in a box with label 'Bullets from the Battlefield of Colenso'. A South Africa 1900 chocolate tin containing remains of the chocolate. A photograph of Wilhelm II (1859-1941) Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. A Letts's Indian and Colonial Office Diary for 1905 with comprehensive entries. A 1914 Princess Mary tobacco tin containing tobacco and cigarettes and other documents. George Sclater-Booth (1860-1919) was the son of George Sclater-Booth, 1st Baron Basing a Conservative politician who served as President of the Local Government Board under Benjamin Disraeli between 1874 and 1880. This lot contains the 1st Baron's passport dated 25th January 1848 signed by Palmerston and a small quantity of related letters. George Limbrey Sclater-Booth was educated at Eton and Balliol College Oxford he joined the 1st Dragoons as a Captain. Succeeding as 2nd Baron on 22nd October 1894. He retired from the Army in 1906, became Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire and Justice of the Peace for Hampshire. He served with the Territorial Force Association being mobilized in 1914, he gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, Brevet Colonel and finally Honorary Brigadier-General in 1918. £800-1500 (+ 30% BP*)

A group of eight medals mounted as worn comprising: A George V Distinguished Service Order, for service during the Battle of Jutland, Gazette date 15/09/1916, p9071. Queen's South Africa Medal with no bars named to Lieutenant H.T. Walwyn, H.M.S.Beagle. 1914-15 Star, named to Lieutenant Commander Walwyn. British War Medal 1914-20 named to Captain Walwyn. Victory Medal with Mentioned in Despatches leaf, named to Captain Walwyn. Jubilee medal 1887. Coronation medal 1911. Coronation medal 1937. Order of St Stanislaus, Commander, 2nd Class (With Swords) Gazette date 05/06/1917 No. 30116, p5592. The Order of St Stanislaus was awarded to Officers of the Royal Navy by the Russian Government for distinguished service rendered in the battle of Jutland. A set of miniatures, mounted as worn, all twelve medals. A second set of miniatures, mounted as worn, ten medals, lacking Knights Commander of St Michael and St George and the 1937 Coronation medal. Sir Humphrey Walwyn's remarkable history of service covers the Second Boer War, Great War and Second World War. Beginning in 1893 with two years at Dartmouth before joining the battleship Camperdown as a midshipman. By December 1900 he had been promoted to lieutenant. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal for service aboard the eight gun steam sloop H.M.S. Beagle, one of 139 no-bar medals awarded to those serving on the vessel. The Great War medals, lieutenant commander to Captain, were awarded for service on mainly Battleships including H.M.S. Warspite at Jutland for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Order of St Stanislas. Promoted to Captain at the end of 1916 he served aboard, and commanded various vessels, after hostilities ended and a spell at the Admiralty as Director of Gunnery Division he went on to take command of the battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth and Valiant. Promotion to Rear Admiral from 1928 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath and Flag Officer Commanding and Director of the Royal Indian Marine. Vice Admiral from 1932, his Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India was awarded on 2nd January 1933. Overseeing the change from the Royal Indian Marine to the Royal Indian Navy in October 1934 as first Flag Officer Commanding, he retired after a month in November being placed on the Retired List on 15th December 1934. Retirement was only brief as from 1936 Walwyn served as Governor of Newfoundland and chairman of the Commission of Government. Appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George on 6th June 1939. During the Second World War he played a crucial role in encouraging Newfoundlanders to join the war effort. A silver Suffragette medal, 1st bar marked For Valour, 2nd bar dated February 10th 1914, with a purple, silver and green ribbon. The medal marked on one side Hunger Strike and the reverse with the name Anna Lewis, in a named leather case which reads Presented to Anna Lewis, By the Women's social and political union in recognition of a gallant action, whereby through endurance to the last extremity of hunger and hardship, a great principle of political justice was vindicated. Also with 2 silver Portcullis brooches by Toye, London (these were given to those imprisoned at Holloway, and are sometimes seen seperately to the medal), 2 photographs of Anna Lewis and friend Miss De Pass, and a paper cutting about Miss Lewis. Also with various Suffragette ephemera (old and more modern) including Panko Votes for Women playing cards (some missing), various badges, Roll of Honour Suffragette Prisoners 1905-1914, Suffragette ribbon, Royal Doulton figure (HN 2816, Votes for Women), and other items.
*The paper cutting is an article about Miss Lewis after her death, she died at 87 at a nursing home in Worthing. It states that she worked with Mrs Pankhurst and was a leading member of the Women's Social and Political Union. For her activities which included being chained to railings and being subjected to force feeding which left her with a hoarse voice for the rest of her life. She set up a special home to nurse other suffragettes so they could make a full recovery, and she attended the special memorial service for the Suffragettes every year. Her name is listed in the Roll of Honour (as Ann Lewis). These items were collected by a lady with an interest in the Suffragette movement, and she used them to give lectures to local groups on the subject. £4000-6000 (+ 30% BP*)

No provision for a mounting ring, in its originally labelled Woodhouse, 11 Harrington St, Dublin fitted case. The medal has a Queen Elizabeth I obverse, with COLL.SS.ET.INDIVID. TRIN. REG. ELIZABETHAE. JUXTA. DVBL. 1591. The initials WW and JW are evident. The obverse reads LIT. REGENT. FELICITER.EXCULTIS, with the College Arms and shamrocks etc. Engraved to Carolus E Osborne 1881. Weight 62.2 grams. 2. A 46mm diameter silver Trinity College medal with mounting ring present, again with the College Arms of a Castle, Lion, Harp, Portcullis, Tudor Rose etc on the obverse. Engraved on the reverse is Oratory C E Osborne 1879. 3. A 44mm diameter silver prize medal, lacking its suspension ring.
