Brian Shields "Braaq" FBA (1951-1997) "The Boat Lake" Signed and dated (19)79, inscribed "Ann", oil on board, 30cm by 40cm Brian Shields was born in Liverpool in 1951. The unusual nickname of 'braaq' is a misspelling of the famous French artist Braque which was adopted on account of his artistic talent as a boy, which he later put to use as his signature on his work. The name "Ann" is also included after his own signature in reference to his sister who died age 21, and whose memory all of his subsequent paintings were dedicated. Shields' paintings focus on the industrial landscape of Liverpool, based often in a humorous way on his childhood memories of the city, in which he frequently painted himself into the scenes as a boy wearing a striped jumper. £6000 - 8000

In 1987-88 Trevor was awarded the British Institute Award for Sculpture. Prisoner of Conscience Originally established in 1962 as the relief arm of Amnesty International, we are a separate charity and the only agency in the UK making grants specifically to prisoners of conscience - individuals who have been persecuted for their conscientiously-held beliefs, provided that they have not used or advocated violence. Our grant recipients include political prisoners, human rights defenders, lawyers, environmental activists, teachers and academics who come from many different countries such as Burma, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Iran, Cameroon and Eritrea. http://www.prisonersofconscience.org
