Dean's Rag Book vintage Fisherman Doll, 1930s/40s, from the Dean's Archives, with accompanying certificate of provenance, dated 10 February 2006. "We have not been able to ascertain the origin of this Dean's doll. It would appear it was a "special" made for a customer, but sadly we have no records of who the customer was or when the doll was made. A reasonable number of these dolls must have been made for Deans to have had a pattern piece for the feet specially printed with both their own name and the customer name printed on them. The techniques used in the making of this doll are very similar to other products Deans made in the latter part of the 1930s and it should be assumed that the doll dates from either the later 1930s or early 1940s. The face is moulded and the eyes transferred onto it. There is spraying around the eyes and a dab of hand painting for the eyebrows. The body is made of netting and the trousers are of felt. The body looks to be filled with kapok." The soles of the feet have white lettering printed out of black fabric: SPECIALLY MADE FOR ANGUS WATSON & CO LTD BY DEANS RAG BOOK CO LTD. HYGIENIC STUFFING REGISTERED DESIGN NO 816660 MADE IN ENGLAND. A little discoloured, small hole to navy cotton where right arm meets his body, otherwise Good Plus; 10.5"/27cm. £40-£60
