A letter from Queen Charlotte addressed to close friend Lady Courtown, signed Windsor, 19 June 1788. The contents of the letter concern the King and Queen's upcoming visit to Cheltenham wherein she asks that the three pews are hired at the local church in order for the royal party to 'appear like Christians and make a good impression upon those who are there', the subsequent visit of Queen Charlotte and King George III took place on 12th July 1788. Despite Cheltenham being established as a spa in the 1720's, it is this royal visit that is often attributed to its success as a major spa town Provenance: Sotheby's R E D Rawlins Collection Sale, 2nd-4th June 1980, Lot 116 see illustration £500-700 (+Fees*)
