Click to view full image... An extremely rare and important Lowestoft armorial teapot or punch pot and cover, circa 1780, the body, possibly London decorated in the James Giles atelier, decorated in polychrome enamels with a coat of arms to one side and a European landscape scene after Meissen/Chelsea to the reverse within gilt and puce borders, the cover with an armorial and similar landscape with floral sprays, the plain knop picked out in gilt with further gilt decoration to the handle and spout, the pot 22cm high
£4000-6000
Note: A report from the College of Arms will be available to the purchaser. The arms of those of Samuel Hayes who married circa 1780, Mary the heir of William Basil of Drumboe Castle, Co. Donegal and was created a baronet of Ireland in 1789.
See Howard Chinese Armorial Porcelain Vol.11 2003 p.212 for a Chinese porcelain example of the same teapot. It is likely that the Lowestoft example was made as a replacement or as a further copy.
The pot belongs to a rare class of armorial and landscape decoration on Lowestoft porcelain (cf Godden Lowestoft Porcelain plate 159 and Lowestoft Porcelain in the NCMS plate 38a & b) which has generated some debate as to whether the decoration has been done at the factory by a Lowestoft artist such as Robert Allen or Richard Powles or by an itinerant artist. A further possibility, given the quality of the decoration and the style of the gilding, is that the pot may have been decorated at the James Giles atelier. For similar armorial decoration attributed to James Giles see Coke In Search of James Giles p. 200.
