  A Regency Ivory Brisé Fan, the slender sticks and guards virtually plain, save for decoration to the tips, which themselves are rounded and very slightly serrated. The twenty four inner sticks are painted in mainly pastel shades at the tips with roses in yellow and pink, foliage, and birds, the latter having applied feathers. The verso is plain.   A Slender Early 19th Century Bone Brisé Fan, the tips of the sticks pointed, the whole intricately and elaborately carved and pierced. The twenty one inner sticks and two guards feature figures, and the reserves form vignettes with either classical or floral borders, further ovals carved elsewhere. The central vignette features a lady in flowing robes, two men observing. To the right, another similar lady, alone, and to the left, a younger lady also alone. A Fine Small Early 19th Century (or earlier) Ivory Brisé Fan, the guards painted and carved, a naked figure in fine relief, and flowers, both with tortoiseshell thumb guards. The recto is divided into three panels by a pair of pierced sticks, one further pierced stick at each side of the guards. A frieze of piercing runs the length of the top just below the blue ribbon. The three painted panels are bordered with gold, and depict Oriental figures, the larger central scene having several people and a very large painted porcelain lidded vase. The verso is a mirror image drawing of the recto. Guard length 19cm £200 - 300

The gorge is particularly striking with a central vignette featuring three men, wearing helmets, and two young ladies, standing next to columns, and to each side other vignettes each with frolicking cherubs. The double paper leaf is in pastel colours giving a light and airy feel to the depiction of young people at leisure in a rural area, gathering flowers for garlands. The verso has an unusual central gilded heart, inside which appear to be music score and bagpipes, this feature within a large spray of flowers. £200 - 400

Admiral Lord Nelson at Trafalgar: A Fine Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, circa 1805-10, the central painted panel depicting Nelson, seated behind a stone bearing a drawing of canon and other weaponry, a cherub holding a crown of laurels above him, a lady to his right bearing a spear and shield, possibly Boudica, the winged goddess Fame (Pheme, personification of fame and renown) blowing her trumpet to the left, the sun shining and warships on the sea. The slender ivory guards are both carved, the recto with a cherub, the verso more stylised, and indeed to the left side two inner sticks plus the lower guard are non-matching replacements. Plain wooden monture with a double paper leaf, the verso plain, the recto printed with a central medallion of three cherubs, one singing from a book, two playing musical instruments, below which are two further vignettes each with a child playing music. A further drawing of a tambourine near the gorge repeats the title written in script at the very top centre of the leaf. The remainder of the leaf is printed with the scores and words for dances such as "Lord Grantham's Whim" and "The Humours of Dublin", and is edged in gold. Guard length 17.5cm £150 - 250

A Regency Topographical Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on slender pierced and carved ivory sticks, the gorge with a central oval with classical scrolling, the guards in a similar vein with the addition of a figure on the upper guard only. The leaf is designed with a central band containing seven depictions of classical ruins, in varying sizes, none as yet identified the central oval cartouche being large, flanked each side by one medium size vignette and two smaller ones. The reserves are formed with very classical stylised borders in dark blue and mauve, filled with colourful Italian scrolling. The edges are finished with bright gold. The verso is plain. The guards and gorge sticks are silvered and gilded, and pierced with bunches of grapes, various sizes of roundels above and below. The double paper leaf is lithographed with a gathering of young ladies and children, a large dog central to the group, adorned with a garland of pink roses. The verso is relatively plain with cream reserves and a central lakeside scene. Shaped gold metal loop. Click to view full image...Click to view full image... A Mid-19th Century Silk Jenny Lind or Palmette Fan, the palm shaped leaf sections linked together with thread. The double leaf depicts Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugenie de Montijo on the left, probably outside the Tuileries Palace, which burnt down in May 1871. Their Civil Ceremony took place in the Tuileries on January 29th, 1853, and this gathering perhaps represents the Emperor presenting his bride to high ranking officials, and members of the Court. The mother-of-pearl sticks are carved and pierced and decorated, in the gorge, with an elegant couple, the guards more simply with flowers. The verso, of plain cream silk, with the tiniest of sketched flowers. Guard length 27cm £200 - 300

The twenty-four inner sticks and two guards are painted in gold, the guards quite simply with a stylised tree, and the gorge area in a similar fashion. The main body of the fan is painted with three large vignettes, adding red and green to the gold. The central vignette depicts a large cockerel, two butterflies and flowers, the smaller vignettes to either side have flowers and two birds to the left, and flowers and a different bird to the right. The verso is similar. The fan is bordered with a design of painted ribbon, whereas in fact this fan is not ribboned but linked with thread. Guard length 25cm £500 - 1000

  A Mid-19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, wooden sticks lacquered in black with three figures in the gorge in grey, a further figure on each guard, foliage behind. The double paper leaf has similar scenes recto/verso with distant mountains, figures with faces of applied and painted ivory, wearing silk robes, and somewhat different headwear. Guard length 32cm. Together with a fine and heavy polished wood fitted fan box, the outer lid having five differently shaped and deeply carved scenes of daily life, with an empty central oval suitable for a monogram. The interior fittings are covered in blue silk, the lid interior painted with four figures, two carrying fans, their faces of applied and painted ivory.
