Ming Dynasty, 16th to 17th Century.
The pear-shaped bottle-form vase with waisted neck, the faceted and lobed 'garlic-head' below a waisted mouth with straight everted lip, all on a cylindrical foot, the neck and body encircled by two coiled chilong.

The pear-shaped body rising from a splayed foot, with a stepped shoulder and high waisted neck and flared mouth rim, the neck with two registers, the first with taotie masks and the second with linked-coins, and set on either sides with twin handles emerging from mythical animal masks, the foot set on each side with a patterned panel.

Of cylindrical form, supported on tripod conical feet, below a leiwen band, a similar band to the rim, below three pierced trigrams below the rim, the body set with a lion head mask with pierced open mouth, opposite an inscription reading guiyou chun zao zhi, shao zhi hua shuwu (date cylindrical to the spring of giuyou, for the Shao Zhi Hua salon). (2)

With a compressed globular body, the shoulder flanked by a wide slightly tapering cylindrical spout the cover with a crenelated rim, hinged overhead handle. (2)

Examples of surviving Chinese bronze kettles appear to be extremely rare, however, an example with similar handle and spout may be found in the painting by Chou Ying (1494-1552) entitled Song Xi Lu Hua Tu, currently in the collection of the Jilin Provincial Museum [detail below].

Ming Dynasty, Jiajing Dynasty.
The pear-shaped body rising from a tall spreading foot to a narrow waisted neck and straight rim, the spout and handles with nodular bands in simulation of bamboo stem, the body cast with two tear-shaped panels enclosing a shou and fu character, above a linked-coins band, there is a lappet band above the foot, and a band of pierced four petaled flower heads to the foot.

Of rectangular form, with the pear-shaped body rising from a high everted foot to a slender waisted neck, the spout emerging from a dragon's mouth and the tubular handle fixed to the neck with a dragon ornament, the neck decorated with bats above a trailing ribbon and the body with a medallion enclosing figures. (2)

Formed as a pierced domed bat, naturalistically modelled seated on a bed of clouds and connected to the base by an arching pillar of rectangular section, the base decorated with four bats encircling a central roundel with geometric patterns.

Of compressed globular form, supported on low conical tripod feet and rising to an everted rim, the sides flanked by a pair of protruding lion-head handles, the base with a three-character Qin Shu Lu mark (companion of the qin and the book).

Qin Shu Lu is an alias of the offical Wu Bangzuo, responsible for oversight of bronze censer production during the Xuande period. His apocryphal mark was used in later periods as a tribute to his work and to associate with his literati credentials.

The present lot falls within a group of late Ming and Qing censers with apocryphal inscriptions referencing Wu Bangzuo, the Minister of the Ministry of Works in the 5th year of Xuande, equivalent to 1430.
