ARTHUR JAMES STARK (1831-1902) Sheep in a forest glade oil on canvas 17 x 41cms £320-350 Note: illustrated in Peter Kennedy Scott's book "A romantic look at Norwich School landscapes" pg125. Peter also comments "A late Norwich painting, c.1870, but the trees are still individual. AJS painted heavy tree trunks, pollarded, which he must have found more interesting than his father's wholesome oaks. With sleep sheep filling the glade he had no need of a log either! His work is not unlike his contemporary, Alfred George Stannard's - both looked at the Victorians. In this sense this picture is transitional, though still all about trees. It could be a view in Epping Forest - one of his locations".

JOHN BERNEY LADBROOKE (1803-1879, BRITISH) "A Romantic Evening" oil on board 33 x 43cms £1500-2000 Provenance: Ex-collection Colonel Vernon Harcourt. Note: illustrated on the front cover of Peter's book "A romantic look at Norwich School landscapes", further illustrated on page 43 and Peter says "This unsigned and untitled painting was probably done a while before 1830, and then displayed in one of his brother Robert's frames. The study was repeated a little later with cows instead of people, and again in 1856 with the cathedral spire in the distance. All of this suggests the pictures are compositions, as many of his paintings are. (Interestingly, Dickes illustrates similar subject matter, painted by his father, with trees and lake facing the other way). The orange red sunset appears in some of his early work, though the lighting effect on the trees, produced with a golden glaze is special. A sunken punt adds to the dreaminess of a summer's evening, a little red flower can be spotted in the shadows
