Darwell 2/4th Rgt, generally extremely fine, although this has light scratching to medal edge from tightness of mount. Sgt Darwell was issued the medal with 1879 clasp for action against the Zulus. He died of unknown causes on 29th May 1879 in Utrecht, so almost certainly worn by his widow or mother. With copied roll and newspaper casualty list. (See photo) (Y) £300

  1882 Egypt Medal (un-dated) The Nile 1884-85 clasp re-named in upright capitals to 1407 Pte J. Shaw 1st S.S. Regt nearly very fine. With 5 copied pages of service papers and roll, John Shaw was born in New Mills, Derbyshire, enlisted in South Staffs Regt 28/3/85 aged 19, served in Egypt 20/9/85 to 28/6/86, tried by the Supreme Court in Gibraltar and convicted for "Attempting to commit the abdominal crime of buggary," and discharged from forces 21/12/89, roll confirms issue of medal, but is scored out on his service paper, so probably forfeited on discharge. Downing 1/Border Regt very fine. with 8 copied pages of service record, George Downing was born in Carlisle, enlisted 25/8/98, convicted by DCM of stealing and sentenced to 1 year in prison with hard labour 3/8/00, RTD 1/5/01, convicted by DCM of 4 charges including using violence and sentenced to 6 months in prison with hard labour 18/10/01, discharged 23/10/09, clasps confirmed, medal was forfeited on conviction of stealing, but was restored to him 1/8/07. Rare Hinckley Boer War silver tribute pocket watch, engraved inside "Presented to Private Joseph Bailey by the inhabitants of Hinckley in recognition of his service as a volunteer in the South African War June 1901." In its Services Sports Watches box of issue. Minor wear around release catch to open reverse as the mechanism is very stiff, case with Chester hallmarks for 1901. Hinckley is in Leicestershire so recipient likely to have been with Yeomanry or Leicester Regt. (See photo) (T) £250

Click to view full image... Tank Corps WWI immediate award Military Cross, BWM and Victory Medal with MID Oakleaf to Lieut G.V.T. Dingle (MC named G.V.T. Dingle Lieut Tank Corps) about very fine and better, court mounted as worn in Spink case with matching miniatures in bottom of case. Guy Vickers Trehane Dingle's MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 7th November 1918 while serving with 1st Bn, "When in command of a tank he showed great skill and courage in dealing with enemy machine-gun posts, which were inflicting severe loss on the infantry. On reaching the objective, he patrolled in front of the infantry for five hours, manoeuvring his Tank to take hostile fire. Later, although wounded, he continued to fight his Tank until it caught fire." He was commissioned in the Wiltshire Regt 31/1/17, seconded to Tank Corps, promoted Lieut 31/7/18, Capt 17/5/20, retired 10/6/22. Date of MID unconfirmed but MIC confirms the issue of MID emblems. With copied MIC and LGs, address on MIC is Bovington Camp. Also with copied December 1939 newspaper article, "Inquest on shot Army officer. A verdict that he died from a gun-shot wound, self inflicted during a sudden impulse brought on by mental depression, was returned by the Wiltshire county coroner at an inquest held on Lieut Guy Vickers Trehane Dingle, a 42 year old Army officer, whose dead body with a wound in his head was discovered by his batman in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Deceased's batman told the coroner that he had known Dingle to be depressed. He was on the Regular Army Reserve of Officers and rejoined in June last. He had been acting as messing officer, and his duties in this respect seemed "to worry him quite a bit." A revolver was found underneath the body. Dr Seggers said deceased had a wound in the forehead and another in the roof of his mouth. (See photo) (R) £1000

Click to view full image... 1915 gas attack Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1914 Star trio with date bar and KGV Army LSGC to 9159 W.O. Cl 2 T. Barrett K.S.L.I. (Sjt 1/Shrops L.I. on DCM, Cpl 1/Shrops L.I. on star, 7808134 Sjt on LSGC), very polished, thus fair to nearly very fine. Thomas Barrett's DCM was announced in the London Gazette dated 15th March 1916 "For conspicuous gallantry during and after the gas attack. He went across 60 yards of open ground, within close range of the enemy, to bring back a man who had been incapacitated." With copied pages of war diary for 19th December 1915, "At 5.15 a.m. the enemy makes a gas attack on our trenches with what is evidently a new form of gas. The "gassing" lasts for about an hour, after which enemy assaults our line in small bodies. One party of 10 and another of about 30 attack the Mortsldje Salient, but are quickly driven back by our rifle fire, an officer & man of the former party being seen to fall. The gas attack is said to have extended from the Verlosenhoek Road to the point where the British line crosses the canal. At the same time, there is a heavy bombardment of our support trenches & all communications which continues throughout the day. Our casualties on this day are 2 killed, 14 wounded, 4 die of gas poisoning & 39 are suffering from gas poisoning." Barrett Winner 1913, 1924 certificate of attendance at Small Arms School, KSLI Xmas card, 1931 Vocational Training certificate and copied MIC and LG, served 5th Rifle Brigade (Special Rserve) 24//08-1/3/09, enlisted KSLI 2/3/09, landed France 10/9/14, clasp & roses confirmed, later served in MGC, LSGC awarded Oct 1927, discharged 1/3/31.
