FRANCIS SARTORIUS (LONDON 1734-1804) The chaise match run on Newmarket Heath on Wednesday 29 August 1750 oil on canvas 64.1 x 129.5 cm The present lot is based on a work by James Seymour (1702-1752) in the Paul Mellon Collection. The subject is a celebrated match against time, which was undertaken for a wager of 1,000 guineas laid by William Douglas, 3rd Earl of March, later 4th Duke of Queensberry and Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, and taken on by Theobald Taafe and Andrew Sproule. The earls claimed that four horses could draw a four-wheeled carriage with one passenger 19 miles in one hour. The earls were victorious having designed a special light-weight vehicle for the occasion, built by Wright of Long Acre. The painting depicts how it was drawn by a team of racehorses, the leaders ridden by the jockeys, with the passenger being a young boy. £6,000-£8,000

RUSSIAN SCHOOL, CIRCA 1800 Portrait of Count Otto Magnus von Stackelberg (1736-1800), half-length, wearing the sash and star of the Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky and the sash and star of the Order of Saint Vladimir oil on canvas 63.5 x 50.7 cm. Von Stackelberg was an influential diplomat of the Russian empire. He was at the height of his power while he was ambassador in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1772-1790. Von Stackelberg's main task was to influence the government in order to create a weak Poland as buffer to the Russian borders (see: D. Stone, The Polish-Lithuanian state, 1386-1795, vol.4, Washington, 2001.) This portrait relates to a lost painting by Alexander Roslin (1718-1793). Roslin was in St. Petersburg from September 1775 to August 1777, when he departed for Warsaw and was received by the Polish King Stanislas II. It is likely that Roslin painted von Stackelberg during this period. The present lot however, is not a direct copy as the sitter wears different orders. £2,000-£3,000
