Click to view full image... CESARE LAPINI (ITALIAN ,1848-1893) AND EDUARDO DEL SANTA (ITALIAN, FL LATE 19TH CENTURY):
A FINE MATCHED PAIR OF WHITE MARBLE BUSTS OF ORIENTALIST MAIDENS
the Lapini Odalisque depicted smiling with downcast eyes, wearing a headdress with Greek key border and tassels, her hair falling in loose waves, a decorative necklace and low drapery around her bust, signed to the reverse 'C. Lapini / Firenze 1889', on a cylindrical spreading socle, the second bust signed 'E. Del Santa Galleria Bazzanti Firenze', also depicting an Arab beauty, her hair arranged in two plaits beneath a headdress decorated with a dove, wearing a similar necklace, her breast exposed, 67cm and 66cm high respectively, (2)
For a similar bust by C. Lapini sold at auction see Sotheby's, London, 6 December 2011, lot 102.
For a marble figure by Del Santa see Bonhams, London, 5 July 2012, lot 155.
Professeore Cesare Lapini is widely regarded as one of the key figures in Italian late 19th century sculpture. The present bust by Lapini forms a pleasing pair with that by Del Santa, who was working in the same artistic circle as Lapini in Florence during the 1890's. Both sculptors are known to have exhibited at the Galleria Bazzanti, evidenced by the inscription to the reverse of Del Santa's bust and by the numerous works by Lapini that are similarly inscribed. For example the large marble group of Venus and Cupid signed 'Gallery / P. Bazzanti / Florence / Profe C Lapini ' that was sold at Christie's London, 11 March 2015, lot 130 (£27,500).
The Galleria Bazzanti was initially established as a marble carving workshop in 1822 by Pietro Bazzanti's father Niccolo. By the end of the 19th century the gallery had become a prestigious retail space offering marble sculptures by only the most talented and renowned sculptors of the day, such as Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi and Guglielmo Pugi, as well as displaying Pietro Bazzanti's own pieces. Many of Bazzanti's works also feature this inscription.

This enigmatic head, imbued with a serene expression and displaying a fine balance between a life-like naturalism and slightly stylised facial features; is typical of the late Gothic French style. The eyes, set wide apart, slightly narrowed and slanted and framed by highly arched brows, the strong but in proportion nose and sensitively rendered lips are all features associated with limestone carvings of this period. the fragmentary relief, depicting a standing putto holding a shield flanked by stylised scrolls, raised on a later ebonised plinth, the relief 40cm high x 27cm wide
Travertine stone, a distinctive, hard stone featuring small inclusions, was used in Italy from Antiquity onwards, finding favour again in the Renaissance period. Due to its hard, granula composition, it was not usually used by sculptors carving in the round, but was perfect for architectural elements such as the present relief, which is carved in low relief. Travertine derives its name from the river Tiber and was used in Rome for the colonnade of St Peter's Square by Bernini and for the ribs of St Peter's dome by Michelangelo.

Click to view full image... A 17TH CENTURY ITALO-FLEMISH BRONZE FIGURE OF JULIUS CAESAR
the nude figure standing a contra-posto, wearing a laurel headdress, later mounted on a rectangular bronze plinth, the bronze 25.5cm high, 32cm high overall
This rare 17th century statuette of Julius Caesar is loosely derived from the Antique Roman original (2nd century a.d.) at the Marble Palazzo Mattei, Rome. The figure is standing a contra-posto, his weight on his right leg and his left slightly raised, his left arm raised to the height of his abdomen and holding a sphere, his right slightly lower and outstretched, his gaze looking to dexter. The sculptor has added a laurel crown, probably to give a clear indication that the figure represents Caesar. That the sculptor has chosen to depict Caesar nude, rather than wearing armour as is more common in 18th and 19th century statues, demonstrates the renewed enthusiasm for the classical tradition and in particular the ideal nude, that was rediscovered during the Renaissance. No longer was depicting the naked body considered to be irreligious or even Pagan, but in modelling the naked form, the sculptor became closer to God and His creation of man in His own image (Adam).
The revived interest in these classical themes is clearly demonstrated by the important carved limewood statuette of Julius Caesar by Giambologna, recently the subject of an article by Dr. Charles Avery. This exceptional carving is the only known sculpture carved in wood by the sculptor and, dated 1551, is also his earliest known work. It depicts Caesar in a similar (though much more complex) pose, looking to dexter, a scroll in his right hand, the weight in his right leg and left slightly raised, the laurel crown on his head. The present bronze is a rare model and the depiction of the nude figure, as well as the pose and attributes used, place it firmly in a tradition dating back to Antiquity and revived during the Renaissance.

Click to view full image... A LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY GERMAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF FORTUNA
the nude figure in mid step, her left leg raised and balanced on the toes of her right, her arms raised and supporting her flowing drapery, raised on an ebonised, stepped plinth base, the figure 30cm high, 35cm high overall
The distinctive facial features of the dancing Fortuna represent an ideal of beauty very different to ours, her round face and double chin, overly large, wide nose and heavily lidded eyes further defined by the lower eye lids as well as the upper give her an appeal far from the classical ideal. Her eyebrow hairs have been individually tooled and her hair swept back. Her physique is strong and stocky with her small breasts very close together, the nipples well cast over the delineated rib cage. The drapery has been finely tooled in places to suggest different textures and a pattern throughout, cast separately it is screwed on to the back of her left arm and the side of her left thigh, with a further separately cast part attached just below her bottom. A supporting bronze bracket has been applied to the base and screwed to her back.
These physical features show the influence of the important German sculptor Leonard Kern.
