In 1948, Bernard Weatherill became director of the family firm Bernard Weatherill Ltd, Sporting Tailors. The firm held the Royal Warrant for Civil, Military and Sporting clothes and made many sporting items for the Royal Family.
Weatherill was elected Conservative MP for Croydon North East in 1964, and rose through the ranks to become Speaker of the Houses of Common in 1983; a post he held until 1992 when he was succeeded by Betty Boothroyd. He was the last Speaker to wear full dress robes.
In his acceptance speech, Bernard revealed that he had overheard one MP say to another, "I don't know what this place is coming to, Tom, they've got my tailor in here now."

An interesting collection of Royal clothing made by Bernard Weatherill
to include the side-saddle apron worn by Queen Elizabeth II to the Trooping of the Colours in 1954, three pairs of Jodhpurs made and worn for Queen Elizabeth, dated 1933, 1935 and 1970 respectively, a pair of jodhpurs made for Prince Charles, dated 1958, all with handwritten labels identifying the wearer and the date, also a pair of black wool riding trousers for King George VI, to which is pinned an undated note reading 'Uniform overalls made for HM King George VI'.
The collection is accompanied by a handwritten letter by Bernard Weatherill MP, dated 1965, which states that 'the garments in this box were made by the firm for various members of the Royal Family and have been handed back to [me] as mementos' (6)
