One seated holding a box from which a bat is emerging, the other standing with a lotus flower stem in her left hand, 17cm H. £200-300 The increased interest in women's rights was an important part of the Communist project in China in the 1960s and 1970s. The replacement of boys holding lotus flowers, with girls, in works of art as a symbol of the wish for many children marked an important step in the transformation and adaptation of traditional Chinese iconography.

ZHANG QIANYING (1909-2003) Bird on branches, ink and colour on paper signed ZHANG QIANYING, dated 1982, with three seals of the artist, 50 x 33cm. Provenance: Collection of Mr and Mrs Chen. The Chens arrived in London in the late 1960s to set up as successful restaurateurs and were passionate collectors of Chinese art, mainly acquiring pieces within London since that date. They moved in circles of artists and connoisseurs and counted among their close friends the artists Fei Chengwu (1911-2000) and Zhang Qianying (1909-2003). £200-300
