Edward Matthew Hale was a military artist and officer. He was appointed as the special artist for the Illustrated London News in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 and later in the 2nd Anglo-Afgan War 1878-80.

In all probability, the painting is the same as exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI) in 1891.
