Johannes Bouman (Dutch, 1601-1658): Still life of fruit in a wicker basket, oil on panel, signed lower right, H 47 x W 68cm. Note: Born in Strasbourg, Bouman travelled widely and consequently his paintings display varying influences, principally from French and German art. An identical wicker basket to that of the present picture features in many of Bouman's works. Wicker baskets filled with flowers or fruit were a staple element in the French still-life repertoire, occurring in works by Bouman's French contemporaries such as Louise Moillon and Jacques Linard. Such baskets reveal the influence of Flanders where the independent genre of still-life painting originated at the end of the 16th century. £1000-1500

Thomas Luny (British, 1759-1837): A pair of oils on canvas depicting an Anglo-French naval engagement off the Bay of Audierne, Brittany, during the Napoleonic Wars, one signed & dated 1834, each H 76 x W 112cm. Note: This pair of pictures show Pellew's Action in HMS Indefatigable against the French Droits de l'Homme in the Bay of Audierne, Brittany on the 13th January 1797. The lower picture shows the start of the action, Sir Edward Pellew in HMS Indefatigable (44 guns), ahead of Captain Robert Reynolds in HMS Amazon 36 (a less swift frigate). The upper picture is the end of the night action (4.20am) with the dismasted Droits de l'Homme (74 guns), on the reef (it was low water when she grounded) and HMS Amazon damaged aloft. Amazon later went ashore too, all but 5 of the ship's complement made it to land to become prisoners of war. Droits de l'Homme lost nearly 1000 men in the icy conditions. There was nowhere to shelter on board when the tide rose and the storm increased. There is a monument to their loss on the coast adjacent to the wreck, 1 1/2 miles north of the village of Penhors. Although forced into the bay, Pellew in the Indefatigable, with masterly seamanship, clawed off the lee shore by wearing the ship (his shrouds were cut up and tacking would have brought down his rig in such a gale). £10000-20000
