A fascinating group of Georgian documents belonging to Olivia Serres (1772 - 1834), who was an imposter who claimed the title of Princess Olive of Cumberland. She was a painter and writer who became obsessed that she was a member of The Royal Family and led a very colourful life. Eventually in 1823 Sir Robert Peel, the Home Secretary spoke in Parliament and denounced Olive's documents supporting her claim as forgeries and her story as a fabrication (which indeed it was). The documents comprise a document supposedly signed by King George III, awarding the sum of £15,000 on The King's death to 'Olive our Brother of Cumberland's daughter'...'as a recompense for the misfortune she may have known through her Father', dated June 2nd 1774 and witnessed by J. Dunning - a Sworn Statement from Sir Walter Lewis 'now residing at the London Coffee House, Ludgate Hill' stating The King's signature on the above document is genuine - dated 20th June 1821 and another from Samuel Griffin Secretary to J. Dunning later Lord Ashburton (now deceased) stating his signature on the document is genuine
