WW2 Immediate Military Cross (1945), 1939-1945, Africa, Italy Stars and BWM with MID oakleaf attributed to Major Frederick Thomas William Nixon R.E. nearly mint, MC with light toning, with matching set of swing mounted miniatures. The MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 18th October 1945. With copy of recommendation which was initially a recommendation for the award of a DSO, but was downgraded to an MC. "Major Nixon commanded 501 Fd Coy RE in support 169 (Lon) Inf Bde throughout the fighting from the RENO to VENICE. Throughout these operations this officer showed outstanding qualities of leadership, initiative and drive and by personal example and gallantry inspired his unit to great performances.
On 17/18 Apr the Bde was held up in front of the river MARINA over which all available bridges were destroyed. This obstacle was covered by artificial flooding and a series of minefields and scattered mines 1500 yds deep. Major Nixon himself carried out a recce of the area by day in spite of the wide open nature of the terrain, in view of an enemy expecting to be attacked. As a result a route was gapped through the minefield and a bridge constructed over the river to support the infantry bridgehead in a matter of 14 hours. This operation took place at a decisive moment of the operations when the ARGENTS GAP was all but breached and any delay in maintaining the assault might well have enabled the enemy to reorganise and prepare himself.
Later on night 19/20 April 45 it was essential to get tanks over the CANALE DIVERSIVO to support a small infantry bridgehead formed on the North side. Major Nixon personally organised and conducted the placing of two ARKS in the canal at MR 267704 which was effected satisfactorily notwithstanding heavy enemy mortar and shell fire directed on to the area. Due to the determination and foresight of this officer during a vital period tanks were able to cross in support of the infantry in time to repel a strong enemy counter attack and thus enable the advance to continue.
The incidents above are only two of a series of gallant acts performed by this officer. In spite of intense fatigue and incessant demands on sappers, he never once faltered and carried his unit through with him. With less resolute, skilful and determined leadership on the part of this officer, the rapid series of assaults and the advance by the Queens Bde could not have been carried out."
He was also twice Mentioned in Dispatches for service in Italy announced in the London Gazettes dated 11th January 1945 and 29th November 1945. Sold with good range of original documentation including 2 MID certificates and transmittal slips and 1 envelope of transmission, Buckingham Palace letter of regret for MC, MC box of issue (lid detached), War Office box of transmission for campaign medals to F T W Nixon, Bexhill-On-Sea and transmittal slip, 1943 British Forces Egypt ID card with photo, letter of congratulations for MC from HQ 169 Bde and Worthing Town Clerk, 2 release forms, un-named silver gilt masonic medal etc. Also with various copied LGs, he was commissioned 28/12/40 and released 24/11/45. Sold on behalf of the family, never been on the market before. (See Lot 23 for family medal) (See photos) ( 1/2B) £900*
