| The Studio Collection of Ronald & Betty Pennell | The following lots 460 to 527 are from the studio of artists Betty and Ronald Pennell and their collection of 20th Century paintings and sculpture.
Ronald Pennell is an artist, engraver and sculptor with an international reputation for his work in bronze and notably his richly engraved narratives on hand-blown glass vessel forms. Represented in public collections in America, Japan and Europe, he holds a Professorial Fellowship at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1993 and the Highest Honour in 1996. Throughout his career he has developed a complex and idiosyncratic vocabulary, with gentle humour overlaying a more serious intention of meaning. Typically he presents us with the exploits of an everyman figure (often watched over by a Jack Russell Terrier) amidst the forces of nature, commonly in the form of crocodiles, owls and mythical beings. His sculpture includes medals and reliefs in cast bronze and this sale includes a particularly interesting and unique series of sculptures in cast glass made in the 1990s. Tutored by John Nash and Edward Bawden at the Royal College of Art, Betty Pennell continues the British Romantic landscape tradition with distinctive, personalised imagery from the English/Welsh borderlands: magical juxtapositions of yew trees, pathways, hedges and enigmatic figures in oil, watercolour and wood engraving. During the 1970s and 80s she began to concentrate on printmaking, producing a series of richly worked investigated relationships between landscape and human intervention to critical acclaim. Eventually, painting and drawing have come to dominate her work. Her keen awareness of the land, gardens and natural forms continues to evolve. Favourite trees, the lip of a bank, startling light edging dark, rain-laden clouds, all reinforce a sense of location and belonging in the world and, specifically, of place. The Pennell collection is a culmination of their 50 year creative partnership. It includes artists from Europe and the USA and artists such as Eugene Fisk and Charles Shearer from the days of Elizabeth Organ's magical Kilvert Gallery in Clyro near Hay on Wye on the Welsh borders.
