depicted in profile, her hair in an elaborate jewelled net, 45cm high x 37.5cm wide
The present relief appears to be a direct copy of a Renaissance carved marble portrait of an unknown noblewoman by the important Mantuan sculptor Gian Cristoforo Romano. The original relief is of similar size to the present marble and is now in the National Gallery of Scotland, (Inv. NG.2522).
£2,500-£3,500

Click to view full image... A 13TH / 14TH CENTURY FRENCH GOTHIC CARVED LIMESTONE HEAD OF A MAN
with finely carved strands and curls of hair, heavily lidded eyes and stylised beard, later raised on a square stone plinth, the head 24cm high, 38cm high overall
The distinctive style of carving of this head can be favourably compared to a carved limestone head in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (Inv. No.2007.143). The stylised moustache and beard are carved in a similar manner on both examples, the moustache has long strands terminating in tight scrolls, the beard resembles plaited sections, and a tight ring of finely carved curls frame the face. The serene expression and heavily lidded eyes are also typical of French Gothic carving of this period. The Metropolitan head depicts Joseph and probably once formed part of the choir screen at Chartres cathedral. The present bust was also probably once part of a large architectural scheme.

These figures were once part of a large Crucifixion altarpiece. The style of carving, decoration and use of limewood are all typical of the large figural altarpieces produced in large numbers in Franconian workshops during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This unusual pair of carvings lack the neo-classical style physiques apparent in many of the figures produced in Franch during the 18th century, their heads are rather large compared to their more naturalistic bodies, and they both feature large eyes with well delineated pupils set wide in their oval faces, all indications that they may have been produced in Germany rather than France.

the winged figure standing a contro-posto, with arms raised, on a scrolling triangular plinth with volute scrolls to each corner and stepped plinth feet, 34cm high
Alessandro Algardi was one of the most renowned sculptors working in Rome in the first half of the 17th century, producing both large scale works and small gilt bronze statuettes and reliefs of this type. Compare for instance to the gilt bronze Virgin attributed to Algardi by Jennifer montagu that was sold at Sotheby's London, 9 July 2008, lot 115. This attribution was based on similarities to other works in the sculptor's oeuvre, particularly the folds of drapery and the afterworking to the surface of the bronze.

the triform stand modelled with three winged, putti satyrs, united by volute scrolls and raised on a shaped scrolling base, 10cm high
This stand was probably the base for a functional item such as an inkwell or candelabra. Roccatagliata was renowned for producing decorative figural objects of this type, which were designed to be appreciated for their sculptural appeal as much as their practical use. The distinctive facial features apparent in the present bronze are typical of his work, such as the heavily lidded eyes and ample curly hair, as well as the stylised elements such as their scrolling dolphin-type tails are typical of Venetian bronzes of this period.

Click to view full image... A BRONZE FIGURE OF MARS AFTER A FRENCH MODEL FROM THE LAST THIRD OF THE 16TH CENTURY PROBABLY FLEMISH, FIRST HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY
nude except for a plumed helmet with scrolling decoration, and a sash over his shoulder, standing a contra posto and holding a spear in his right hand, raised on a small integral base over a later rectangular bronze plinth, 41cm high, 45cm high overall
King François I of France commissioned Cellini to make a monumental statue-about 18.7 meters (some 54ft.) high of Mars (Walter Leo Hildburgh, "Benvenuto Cellini's Model for His Colossal Mars", Burlington Magazine 85, no. 497 (August 1944), pp. 200-2). The statue was to crown a large square fountain in a courtyard at Fontainebleau. For this colossus Cellini says that he produced a model about 60 centimetres high, which "held a broken lance, raised aloft in its right hand and the left hand was placed on the hilt of a scimitar fashioned in a most beautiful shape; it was posed on its left foot, and the right rested on the crest of a helmet as richly decorated as it is possible to imagine." The present, smaller, statuette (known in various casts with minor variations), of which Hildburgh, owned an example (now in the V&A, A.4-1944), differs from the big Mars most obviously in the position of the helmet, here firmly on the head and there under the right foot. Another statuette exists [in two or three casts only, e.g. one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York] that is in this important respect identical with the image described by Cellini. Nevertheless, there does seem to be a vague connection and it is usually assumed that the statuettes reflect a wax model left behind in Cellini's studio when he fled from France, perhaps for the Mars in the series of life-size silver statues bearing candlesticks in a raised hand that he produced for the Gallery of Francois I inside the chateau of Fontainebleau, whose actual appearance is unknown (see C. Avery, "Cellini's silver statues of the gods for Fontainebleau", in Studies in the Decorative Arts, The Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture, New York, XIV, no. 1, Fall-Winter 2006-2007, pp. 2-18 (esp. pp. 11-13). Another example in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, Germany, is catalogued by U. Berger & V. Krahn (Bronzen der Reniassance and des Barock: Katalog der Sammlung, Braunschweig, 1994, pp 304-5, no 245) as: "after a French model from the last third of the 16th century, the cast seemingly Flemish, first half of the 17th century".

Click to view full image... AFTER DONATELLO (ITALIAN, 1386-1466): A LARGE LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY BRONZE EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF GATTAMELATA
the stallion with front left leg raised, dark brown patination, raised on a portor marble rectangular plinth, 60cm high x 57cm wide
The present bronze is a reduction of the important life size equestrian monument by Donatello commemorating Condottiero Erasmo da Narni, known as 'Gattamelata'. Following the death of Gattamelata in 1443, the Republic of Venice commissioned the monument in his honour which was installed in the Piazza del Santo in Padua in 1453. Donatello captures the spirit of the man in his composition, he is shown as a composed, capable and powerful leader, even his horse is strong and yet poised. Donatello's monument is the earliest surviving equestrian monument produced since Antiquity, and proved to be extremely influential to later sculptors and their patrons who choose to depict great rulers on horseback. Donatello himself was inspired by the ancient sculptors and the similarities between the present composition and the Marcus Aurelius' equestrian statue are obviously apparent.

Click to view full image... AN EARLY 16TH CENTURY BRABANT (ANTWERP) CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF THE CRUCIFIED THIEF
blindfolded, his arm bound with ropes at the elbow to the cross and hanging down, his legs also bound, traces of original polychrome, 15.5cm high
This fragmentary figure probably formed part of a Passion altarpiece and would have been one of a pair, depicting the Good Thief and the Bad Thief, with the Crucifixion at the centre. The bottom of the cross would have had pegs and a shaft to attach it to the main altarpiece. Many examples of this type of altarpiece survive in tact, and numerous single figures such as the present piece are in European collections, in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Inv. no.A3-1962) but also in Brussels and Amsterdam. Most of these figures were produced in Antwerp between the years 1510-1530, and our example is typical of this type.
