Click to view full image... Fine Georgian gold (18ct) and black enamel memorial ring, inscribed - 'Genl. Philip Honywood - Died 20th Feb. 1785'. General Philip Honywood (1710 - 1785) of Marks Hall, Coggeshall, Essex and Howgill Castle, West Morland, was a courageous British Army Officer and M.P. He was a giant of a man of his time at 6ft 3 inches tall. At the age of twenty-five, he joined the Cavalry as a Cornet in the 11th Dragoons and by 1743, was a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1743 he fought at the Battle of Dettingen during the War of Austrian Succession, where King George III personally led his troops on the field against the French (the last time a British Monarch did so). Honywood distinguished himself having received twenty-three broadsword wounds and two musket ball wounds (which were never removed) and survived. He was afterwards promoted to a Lieutenant-Colonel and later became a General and Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 where he was again seriously wounded at the skirmish at Clifton in 1745. He was elected Member for Parliament for Appleby in 1754, which he held until a year before his death. In 1782 he was appointed Colonel of the 3rd Dragoon Guards which he held until his death in 1785. His Estate at Marks Hall generated £6,000 per annum, which he left to his cousin. A fine portrait of him on horseback by Thomas Gainsborough painted in 1765 at Marks Hall survives

Rare 1930s Schneider Trophy miniature given to a member of the winning British team, surmounted with a sculpture of silver plated bronze depicting a Zephyr skimming the waves and a nude winged figure kissing Zephyr recumbent on a breaking wave flanked by two other Zephyrs and of Neptune. The symbolism representing speed conquering the elements of sea and air. The ebonised base mounted with eight silver plaques to the sides detailing names of the winning teams 'High-Speed Flight - Royal Air Force 1927, 1929, 1931' and 'International Schneider Trophy won outright by Vickers Super Marine Rolls-Royce S.6B 1931'. The trophy 14cm wide x 11cm deep x 12cm high. The Schneider Trophy was first awarded annually and then bi-annually to the winner of a race for seaplanes and flying boats. It was held twelve times between 1913 and 1931 to encourage technical advances in aviation. The Rolls-Royce engined S.6B broke the world speed record twice and won the trophy outright, being the first aircraft to break the 400mph barrier

  Fine Victorian leather covered despatch box with gilt tooled 'Rr. Admiral Price' to lid and top handle, the interior of lid with stationery flap and velvet lining to the rest, with Bramah lock and key, 38cm wide x 23cm deep x 14cm high. Rear Admiral David Price (1790 - 1854), joined the Navy in 1801 - was present at the Battle of Copenhagen and fought in numerous actions. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1850 and was appointed Commander-in-Chief in the Pacific in 1853. He was preparing an attack on Russian vessels when on 30th August 1854 he shot himself with a pistol - his suicide assigned to a dread of his responsibilities. Sold with research
