HENRY STRATTON BUSH, A 19TH CENTURY PAIR OF WATERCOLOURS Gibraltar, view from the rock, with military boats in harbour, settlements on the beach and two large cannons in foreground, the other a close up view of cannons on the shoreline and tall ships in harbour, initialled lower left 'Gibraltar BHS'. (36cm x 35cm) Henry Stratton Bush was one of a long line of amateur artists recording their travels in mid 19th Century, a lieutenant promoted to Major, he served in the 41st Foot, The Welsh Regiment. The regiment arrived in Malta, February 1853, on the Troopship Simoom from Corfu, along with 42 women and 65 children. He went on to fight in the Crimean War and was slightly wounded at the second Battle of Inkermann, 5th November 1854. His drawings, sketches and watercolours, the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Europe and the West Indies include important contemporary views of the Hospital at Scutari, Constantinople, the battle of Alma and St James Barracks, Trinidad. £200-400 (+ Fees*)
