THREE LATE 14TH / EARLY 15TH CENTURY ITALIAN CARVED BONE PANELS FROM AN EMBRIACHI ALTARPIECE depicting the Crucifixion, the large pointed arch panel depicting Christ on the cross with soldiers below, the other two panels depicting the Virgin mourning and St John the Baptist, later mounted in a velvet clad, gilt frame, together with a purpose made, 19th century leather covered case, the largest panel 22cm high. Provenance: These panels have been in the same family since before the second world war.The present panels are almost identical to those of an altarpiece sold at Sotheby's, 3 July 2012, lot 62, £13,750. The depiction of Christ, the palm leaves at the top of the cross, the rocky base the supports it and the two soldiers at the foot of the cross are all directly comparable. The position of the figures of Mary and John are also very similar with the same arrangement of drapery. It is therefore highly probable that it came from the same workshop as the Sotheby's altarpiece. £300-£500
