A mid-19th Century brass Skeleton timepiece probably by Evans of Handsworth in the form of The Scott Memorial, the 7.25ins diameter fretted silvered dial with Roman numeral cartouches, the heavy twin brass framed single train chain and fusee with balance escapement, the framework of fretted Gothic pattern and with gilt metal seated figure of Walter Scott and his dog, on rectangular plinth, 20.5ins high, mounted on white marble two-tiered oval base, with bun feet and with oval glass dome, 26ins high £1000-1500 Note: In 1805 Boulton & Watt of The Soho Foundry, Handsworth, Birmingham decided to discontinue the manufacture of clocks and handed this side of the business over to John Houghton, who had been their foreman. Houghton established himself in Soho Street and called the business "The Soho Clock Factory" where trade flourished and in due course his son-in-law William Frederick Evans joined him. Houghton retired in 1843 leaving Evans to run the business, and died some 20 years later.
