Helen Catherine Gifford (British, 19th century): A leather bound album of botanical interest, containing numerous watercolour studies with accompanying text, pages numbered 1-152, signed on title page & dated 1861. Note: Helen Gifford was the sister-in-law of renowned English novelist Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) and played a central role in the facilitating the successful courtship of Hardy & her sister, Emma Lavinia Gifford (1840-1912). In 1870, Hardy, then working as an architect, had been commissioned to prepare a report on the condition St Julitta's, the parish church of St Juliot, near Boscastle in Cornwall, where Helen Gifford's husband, the Reverend Cadell Holder, was rector. There he met Emma, who had accompanied her sister since her arrival at the rectory in 1868. Their courtship inspired Hardy's third novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes. £400-600
