Purses of this type hang from the belt when in formal court dress. Such purses might also be used, however, in less formal attire by any well-dressed man as pouches for tobacco or a snuff bottle and as general-purpose pockets for small objects.

The left bottle dated 1950, by Zhou Leyuan depicting a continuous landscape scene, the central bottle dated 1964, by Ye Zhongsan, depicting a scene from Pu Songling's Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, the right bottle by Zhou Yueyuan depicting a small mammal, 6-7.5cm H. (3)

Literature: For a related piece see Brody, Old Wine into Old Bottles, A Collector's Commonplace Book, 1993, p. 122. A further discussion of jet can be found in Cammann, Substance and Symbol in Chinese Toggles, 1962, p 72, where it is noted 'the Chinese scholars of the medieval period said that pine resin after a thousand years turned into amber, and amber after a thousand years turned into jet, xi. Therefore, if amber was a symbol of longevity, this was doubly so.'

Of pear-shaped form, stopper, incised Xianfeng nianzhi mark to base, 8.5cm H.
Provenance: Collection of Bernard Buckman (1910-1991).

Literature: Snuff bottles produced by the Imperial Glass Workshop during the Xianfeng reign, the likely origin of the present piece, are extremely rare. According to Zhang Rong (2005) production was strictly limited to one hundred and twenty per year (Luster of Autumn Water: Glass of the Qing Imperial Workshop).
