AFTER AIME-JULES DALOU (FRENCH, 1838-1902): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A NUDE 'DESESPOIR' (DESPAIR)
mid brown patination, seated on a rocky, naturalistic base,
19.5cm high
This figure was cast from a model conceived by Dalou in connection with a monument to the French statesman Leon Gambetta, where it was intended to be placed to the left of the central pedestal. The monument was completed in 1904, two years after Dalou's death, by his pupil Camille Lefevre, and erected in Bordeaux in 1905 (demolished 1961); by then Lefevre had substituted the figures at the foot of the monument to those alluding to the suffering of the Parisian citizens during the siege of Paris in 1781 by sculptures of his own design.
