Provenance:In January 1946, Churchill and his wife Clementine arrived in Florida for a six week visit - their first extended holiday after World War II. There they stayed at the Miami Beach home of Canadian Industrialist Colonel Frank W. Clarke and Churchill did not hesitate in venturing out to paint the local scenery. A contemporary photograph shows Churchill standing before palm trees alongside an easel upon which sits the present picture, half finished. Churchill gave two paintings of the Pyramids at Giza to General Smuts. The present work, painted circa 1946, was hung in the General's study at his home. The other painting, which was hung at Libertas, Pretoria, was stolen in 1972 and has never been traced. Churchill's daughter, Mary Soames, notes that in 1946 'Field Marshall Smuts came and stayed for several days. Winston and he spent hours closeted together; my father always set store by this great man's wisdom. Their relationship dated from 1906, when Smuts had been sent over by the Boers to represent their case to the new Liberal Government, in which Churchill was a junior minister at the Colonial Office' (Winston Churchill - His Life as a Painter, London, 1990, p. 154). (British, 1909-1988): A British botanical artist who specialized in plants from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, Mee was one of the first environmentalists to draw attention to the impact of large-scale mining & deforestation on the Amazon Basin. Most of her illustrations are now part of the Kew Gardens collection which held a memorial to her life in 1989.

A Chinese Marriage Bracket Clock on a Rosewood Stand, C1860: These clocks were originally given as wedding gifts to wealthy Western and Chinese brides in China during the middle 1800's. The highly carved case and matching swivel stand are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. 19 inches high with a 4 inch porcelain dial. Engraving in a floral design surrounds the dial. A double fusee movement with a crown wheel escapement and a sweep second hand. Thick heavy plates on the movement; retains its original fusee chains on both sides. Comes with the original brass key. To simplify winding, this clock also has a swivel base - the entire piece turns around since it winds from the rear. Three pearl pieces are lacking on the door, but the rest of the case is complete - including the glass on the sides, H 31cm x W 18cm x D 15cm £1000-1500
