Signed (‘Lots of luck, Jack Dempsey’) in blue ink to a clear area of the verso which features printed text promoting Dempsey’s restaurant on Broadway, New York. American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion & COOPER HENRY (1934-2011) English Boxer, British & European Heavyweight Champion 1970-71 and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion 1959-71. Individual vintage ink signatures by both boxers; Clay a rare bold blue ink signature (‘Cassius Clay’) on an oblong slim 8vo piece and Cooper a good bold blue ink signature (‘Henry Cooper’) on a page removed from an autograph album. A very light vertical central fold and some light overall creasing to the piece signed by Clay, otherwise about VG to EX, 2 £400 - 600
The present signatures date from around 1963 when Clay and Cooper met in the boxing ring for the first of their two memorable bouts. The fight on 18th June 1963 was staged at Wembley Stadium in London, Clay winning when the referee stopped the fight in the fifth round.

Click to view full image... ALI MUHAMMAD: (1942-2016) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion. A good vintage blue ink signature (‘Muhammad Ali’) to the blank verso of an 8vo card issued by Ind Coope Hotels and bearing the printed statement Do Not Disturb to the recto. Accompanied by a printed small 8vo folding menu and invitation card issued by boxing promoter Jack Solomons for a breakfast meeting to greet Muhammad Ali at the Top of the Tower restaurant in London on 24th July 1966 (evidently the occasion at which the signature was obtained). One very minor stain, a few very slight surface and marks and creases to the card signed by Ali, none affecting the signature, about VG, 2 £200 - 300
The present signature was obtained in between Ali’s fights against Henry Cooper at Arsenal Stadium, Highbury, London on 21st May 1966 and his next fight against Brian London at Earls Court Arena, Kensington, London on 6th August 1966. In both fights Ali won and retained his Heavyweight Championship belt.

A good vintage bold, dark fountain pen ink signature (‘Sincerely Yours, J H Taylor’) on an oblong 12mo piece. Taylor has added the words Open Golf Champion in his hand beneath his signature, along with the years of his five victories. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album annotated in ink in the hand of a collector indicating that the signature was received on 15th October 1927. VG £200 - 300

GOLF: An excellent multiple signed colour 12 x 8 photograph by various golfers, all of them Open Championship winners, comprising Tom Watson (1975, 1977, 1980, 1982 & 1983), Sandy Lyle (1985), Ian Baker-Finch (1991), Nick Price (1994), Nick Faldo (1987, 1990 & 1992), Bob Charles (1963), Severiano Ballesteros (1979, 1984 & 1988), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Lee Trevino (1971, 1972), Peter Thomson (1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 & 1965), Arnold Palmer (1961, 1962), Jack Nicklaus (1966, 1970 & 1978), Gary Player (1959, 1968 & 1974) and Mark Calcavecchia (1989). The image depicts the golfers standing and seated outdoors in full length poses, in two rows, with the Club House of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in the immediate background. The golfers are accompanied by Gordon Jeffrey, Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, who has also signed the image. The photograph was captured before the start of the 1995 Open Championship and Price, the reigning champion at the time, can be seen holding the Claret Jug. Signed in bold black ink by each of the golfers, all with their names alone and largely to clear areas of the image. An impressive collection of signatures of Open Champions. About EX £400 - 600

A.L.S., Bernard Gadney, two pages, 8vo, Buckingham (although on the printed stationery of Winchester House School, Brackley, Northants), n.d. (‘Thursday’), to Filee (?). Gadney confirms a cricket match with his correspondent, explaining that it will be against Huxton Manor Club and providing the address of the ground, owned by Sir Eric Cadogan, and directions on how to get there, ‘As far as I remember its about 10 miles from High Wycombe….You go down a long and winding hill….I will look out for you’, and in a postscript remarking that he has informed the Captain of the team that his correspondent will bowl and bat. Together with a second A.L.S., Bernard Gadney, on two sides of a correspondence card, Winchester House School, Brackley, Northants, n.d., to the same correspondent. Gadney states that he will send his correspondent an old tie and remarks ‘I think it is Masters of Green Street, near Leicester Square, who has them. Neil Blair spent his last term at Stowe painting ties - you may not like it….Anyhow I’m no sartorial expert!’. Also including Ronald Cove-Smith (1899-1988) English Sportsman & Physician, Captain of the England Rugby Union team 1928-29. A.L.S., R. Cove Smith, one page, oblong 8vo, Hyde Park, 2nd January 1930, to [B. A.] Campbell. Cove-Smith informs his correspondent that the dates he has being offered to attend the Peel Institute are not convenient. Further including W. J. A. Davies (1890-1967) Welsh Rugby Union Player, Captain of England 1921, 1922-23. A.L.S., W J A Davies, one page, 8vo, Hampton Wick, Middlesex, n.d., to Hodson (?). Davies states that he would be delighted to attend some games on the 10th & 17th September and apologises for the delay in replying as he has just returned from leave. Also featuring Louis Greig (1880-1953) British Rugby Union Player, Naval Surgeon, Courtier and friend of King George VI. T.L.S., Louis Greig, one page, 4to, London, 28th September 1931, to B. A. Campbell of The Peel Institute. Greig thanks his correspondent for having thought of him although states ‘I greatly fear that my oratorical powers are not strong enough to allow me to accept the honour of your invitation’ and Roderick R. F. MacLennan (1903-1986) British Rugby Union Player. Vintage fountain pen ink signature (‘R. R. F. MacLennan’) and two additional words in his hand on a small piece neatly clipped from the conclusion of a letter. Most of the letters are neatly annotated in ink and pencil and most also have some light age wear and staining, largely caused by previous mounting. G to about VG, 6 £100 - 150

Click to view full image... ABRAHAMS HAROLD: (1899-1978) British Athlete, Olympic Gold medallist, 1924. His feat in the Olympics 100 metres sprint was depicted in the film Chariots of Fire (1981). Three T.Ls.S., Harold M Abrahams, five pages (total), 8vo (two oblong), Kensington, London, September - November 1966, all to Mr. Rutter. Abrahams writes to his correspondent in order to make arrangements for a lecture, changing the proposed date to 2nd November, discussing the various options of trains etc., in part, ‘I shall be bringing a number of coloured slides (between 75 and 100) and assume you will very kindly arrange for a lantern, screen and projectionist’ (30th September 1966), ‘I must get back to London the same evening as I have to leave for a professional appointment in Newark at lunch time the following day….I certainly do not want to spoil the evening in any way….If you would like to discuss this problem, ring me up…..As I live on my own there will be no answer, of course, if I am out - either shopping, working or away from London’ (21st October 1966), ‘There was an amusing paragraph in the Sussex Daily News from Chris Bale who years ago was Sports Editor of the Sunday Times. Curiously enough I was talking about him the very day I came down. He was not present at the lecture or would surely have come up to me!!’ (13th November 1966). Lowe, one page, 8vo, Temple, London, 24th February 1931, to Mr. Campbell. Lowe states that he was sorry to hear about his correspondent’s recent illness although continues to politely decline Campbell’s request (‘…despite your eloquent plea on behalf of one of the best of causes…’) and explains ‘For some time now I have been obliged to decline all requests such as yours - their number over taxed my time - and I do not feel that in fairness to others, even if I had the leisure, I could come to you’. (1929- ) English Athlete who ran the first sub-four-minute mile, 1954, Chris Brasher (1928-2003) British Athlete, pacemaker to Bannister when he ran the first sub-four minute mile, 1954 and Christopher Chataway (1931-2014) English Athlete who also ran as a pacemaker to Bannister when he ran the first sub-four minute mile, 1954. The cover features an attractive design and is postmarked at Leicester, 15th July 1970. Signed by each in bold blue inks with their names alone to a clear area of the cover. VG £80 - 100

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... PETERS JIM: (1918-1999) English Athlete, Men’s Marathon World Record Holder 1952-58. A.L.S., Jim Peters, two pages, 8vo, Thorpe Bay, Southend-on-Sea, 14th February 1984, to Hugh. Peters states that he was sorry to hear of his correspondent’s knee injury and remarks ‘I sustained permanent injury in my last race at Vancouver in 1954 but I refused to let it get me down and I’ve enjoyed a further 30 years helping at grass root level. Indeed, it is 50 years exactly since I joined the Essex Beagles A.C. in 1934 at 15.’ The athlete further writes of his present activities in athletics, including efforts to get an all weather track at Southchurch Park, and also writes of mutual friends, ‘Remember Tom Richards Hugh? 2nd in 1948 Olympic Marathon. Through 150,000 miles training he cannot really walk now but he is well into his 70s and comes along to meetings on crutches. He’s still got all the guts in the world’. A letter of interesting content. A couple of very light, extremely minor stains, one very slightly affecting the signature, otherwise VG £80 - 100

Felce of Messrs. Henry Head & Co. Ltd. Campbell writes regarding the Insurance of Cars and thanks Felce for their letter in reference to Campbell’s recent articles in the Daily Mail on the subject, further remarking ‘It seems perfectly obvious that - judging by the number of complaints which I have been receiving of late from readers of the “Daily Mail” - they would all be well advised to communicate with well known brokers, who would be able to fix them up with policies issued at Lloyds’, and in one of my future articles I propose dealing with this subject’. HORSERACING: An unusual multiple signed 12 x 9.5 photograph by the jockeys Lester Piggott, Willie Carson, Frankie Dettori, Pat Eddery and Walter Swinburn individually, the image depicting the five jockeys standing together in a row in three quarter length poses, each wearing their racing colours, at Nottingham Racecourse, Colwick, on the occasion of Piggott’s final race, 29th October 1985. Signed by each jockey with their names alone to clear areas of the image. Piggott’s signature is very scratchy and only partially legible. Together with a blue ink signature (‘Lester Piggott’) by Piggott on a white card and also accompanied by an unsigned folio printed newspaper supplement issued by the Nottingham Evening Post in recognition of Piggott’s career and final race. Signed photographs of Grace of this size and quality are rare and desirable. A.L.S., J B Hobbs, one page, 4to, Fleet Street, London, 9th February 1932, to Mr. Sabin, on the attractive printed stationery of Jack Hobbs Ltd. Hobbs confirms that it is ‘practically certain’ he shall be able to come along on the 26th March and adds ‘You need not trouble to look out times of trains as I shall motor down, but you can find a place where I can park my car if you like’. A couple of very minor, slight tears to the edges of the folds, not affecting the text or signature. Together with a vintage signed 3 x 3.5 photograph of Hobbs, the oval image depicting him in a head and shoulders pose wearing his cricket sweater. Loosely placed to the top of a silver coloured metal stand in the form of three cricket stumps and mounted to a black wooden plinth with an engraved band relating to Kippax and some of his notable career achievements. An excellent vintage signed Commemorative Cover, the Scot Landy Cover issued the Stanley Matthews Testimonial Farewell match at the Victoria Ground, Stoke on Trent, 28th April 1965. With various post marks, most at Stoke on Trent, 28th April 1965. Signed by Matthews in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the cover. Together with Stanley Rous (1895-1986) English Secretary of the Football Association 1934-62 and President of FIFA 1961-74. An interesting T.L.S., Stanley Rous, one page, small oblong 4to, London, 27th May 1965, to Mr. R. Antinoris, on the printed stationery of the President of FIFA. Rous acknowledges safe receipt of ‘the cover commemorating Sir Stanley Matthews’ farewell game’ and thanks his correspondent for their kindness in sending it to him, remarking ‘I am very pleased to add this valuable cover to my collection’. Early A.L.S., William Shankly, one page, small 4to, Deepdale, Preston, Lancashire, n.d., to Sheila Cattanach. Shankly writes, in full, ‘I have enclosed your page (no longer present) from your autograph book with my name on it, also my team mates, glad to do you the favour if it is one’. VG £100 - 150
Shankly played for Preston North End, from whose ground the present letter was written, from 1933-49, winning the FA Cup with the team in 1938.

A superb signed 16 x 20 photograph, the image depicting Hughes in a jubilant head and shoulders pose wearing his Liverpool kit and holding the European Cup above his head following victory in the final against Club Brugge at Wembley Stadium, London, on 10th May 1978.
