§ Jean Lurcat, French (1892-1966), "L'Homme et Les Regnes", (Trans. Man and the Kingdom of animals and plants) hand woven wool tapestry made by Suzanne Goubely-Gatien, Aubusson, circa 1947, signed in the weave Lurcat together with workshop monogram GG, depicting the figure of a entombed man in an abstract nightscape among a variety of plants and animals, 220cm x 304cm. Provenance: Originally purchased for the Belgium home of the vendor's family in 1947 and has been in the same family from new. A photograph of this lot was used on the front Cover of Homes and Gardens 'The Luxury of Space' February 1966. Jean Lurcat, (1892 - 1966) was a French artist and designer most notable for reviving the art of tapestry weaving in the 20th Century. During the 1930's, Lurcat turned from being primarily a painter to designing tapestries. In 1939 he established a centre for the making of contemporary tapestries in the French town of Aubusson, historically associated with tapestry weaving since the 16th Century. Amongst his most notable works is L'Apocalypse (1948) commissioned for the Church of Notre Dame de Toute-Grace du Plateau d'Assy. £3000-5000 See Illustration
