Leighton, 40 Brewer Street London, dictating to F.C. (Frederick Collins) Wilson Esq. how to care for the book; dated August 1871; Note about Jas. Leighton; James Leighton was a partner in the firm John & James Leighton, Booksellers and Bookbinders at 40 Brewer St., Golden Square. At various times the firm's customers had included Gladstone, Carlyle, Michael Faraday, Sir William Osler, William Morris and Lord Birkenhead. James Leighton was recorded in the 1871 census as a bookbinder. "Sir Finding that "the Hours" incurred so much expense I send this account at once, we have attained to the once great object that of opening freely and with care the Book may be long in use it should not be stood upon the foredge and if on the shelves should always have the support of other Books closely packed the paper is so exceedingly heavy that the Book is safe only when flat as in use on its side, I have the honour to be Sir Yours obediently, Jas.
