| Photography: The Alfred Eisenstaedt Collection | Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898-1995) From the artist's studio: An important collection of works by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898-1995) - The Father of Photojournalism Eisenstaedt was one of the 20th century's most celebrated photographers, with a prolific career spanning many of the significant moments of the century. Born in Dirschau, West Prussia, he became a professional photographer in 1929 and was quickly acknowledged as an exceptional talent, his career was burgeoning when in 1935 he was forced to flee anti-Jewish persecution and move to New York. In 1936 Time magazine was founded and Eisenstaedt was enlisted to join it's luminary stable of photographers including Robert Capa and Margaret Bourke-White. In 36 years working for Time, Eisenstaedt work featured on 90 covers, with over 2500 photo stories published. The present unique collection, comprising of 15 photographs, from Eisenstaedt's personal collection, has been guarded as a family treasure following his death in 1995 when it was passed to Lucille Kaye ( his sister-in-law) and finally in 2012 to her heirs, one of whom is now offering this collection for auction. The present works are additionally distinctive from usual prints in that Eisenstaedt has personally annotated, on the reverse, full descriptions of each image's subject. Amongst the collection are several gems, including a rare warm toned, vintage print of Emperor Haile Selassie and what was possibly Eisenstaedt's most guarded photograph, an image of John F Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy that they have both signed. Eisenstaedt's association with the Kennedys was significant, he helped to shape public perception of the Kennedy administration. In February 1962 President Kennedy asked Eisenstaedt to take his official photograph, following which he wrote in Eisenstaedt's autograph book: "For Alfred Eisenstaedt, who has caught us all at the edge of the New Frontier. What will the passage of the new four years show on his revealing plate?" A while later, Caroline came into the room, looking for gum. Eisenstaedt took the opportunity to photograph her with her father. Both this extraordinary charming image and a signed print of Kennedy's official photograph are included in this collection. Fatefully, decades later Eisenstaedt was asked to photograph another Democratic president, with his wife and daughter. The photograph of the Clintons proved to be Eisenstaedt's last photographic assignment. He asked Chelsea Clinton which of his prints she would like as a gift. She chose a ballet scene. Thus, another highlight of this sale is an iconic photograph of the ballet lesson; an image that is nowadays as equally sought after as other iconic Eisenstaedt prints, such as his most legendary image, that of the sailor and nurse embracing in Times Square on V-J day. Eisenstadt's personal collection is anything but a random selection of his most discerning and favourite images. Rather, every chosen image was informed by the political and cultural atmosphere in which he lived. Unusually though, for someone with access to the powerful and famous, his images always reflects his subjects' individuality and temperament, whether celebrities of the day or ordinary people simply getting on with their lives. In this sense, Eisenstaedt's people are never 'types'; he always resisted that. Rather, they are all universally human, un-judged by his camera, but all encouraged by his calm vision and empathy with his subjects to speak for themselves. If anything, this was Eisenstaedt's abiding gift to his profession. "Eisenstaedt showed that the camera could do more than take a striking picture here and there. He showed that the camera could deal with an entire subject, whether the subject was a man, a maker of history or whether it was a social phenomenon. And that is why Eisenstaedt is called the father of photojournalism." Henry Luce, founder of LIFE magazine.
