Of American Wars of Independence interest - 18th century English glass two handled loving cup engraved with 'Succefs to the Britannia 1774' and with rose and thistle decoration on ringed stem and splayed foot, 20cm wide, 15cm high. The Britannia was a merchant ship built in Bombay and launched in 1774. She was the focus of 'The Charleston Tea Party', a protest against The Tea Act in Charleston, South Carolina in 1774 named after the Boston Tea Party protest of the previous year. In 1796 she transported convicts from Ireland to Australia which led to her Captain being tried for cruelty, but not punished. She also sailed to China and India for the East India Company. This loving cup was probably made for her owners Waters & Co or the Captain who was in 1774 Captain Samuel Ball, Jr
