  Victorian red leather covered Government despatch box belonging to Rt. Hon. Viscount Joselyn (1816-1854) - the box of conventional rectangular form with embossed 'Viscount Joselyn' to lid (handle missing) green velvet lined interior with Bramah lock (broken), 46cm wide x 31cm deep x 15.5cm deep. Viscount Joselyn served in the first Opium War as Military Secretary to Lord Saltourn. He was MP for King's Lynn from 1842 to 1854 and served under Sir Robert Peel as joint Secretary to the Board of Control between 1845-1846. He was Colonel commandant of the East Essex Militia and died aged 38 having contracted cholera whilst staying with his regiment at the Tower of London

This figure study was painted from sittings at Buckingham Palace 1989-1991. The larger finished portrait was officially unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery and subsequently presented to Colchester Borough Council by the artist in February 1992.
Provenance: Purchased by the vendor from Partridge Fine Art from their exhibition 'Richard Stone Notable Portraits' November 2004. Sold with hard back illustrated exhibition catalogue in which this study is illustrated along with the finished work (2)
