AIME-JULES DALOU (FRENCH, 1838-1902): A BRONZE FIGURE OF 'RETOUR DE L'HERBE' BY SUSSE FRERES the peasant woman carrying a sack of crops, on a naturalistic base, signed 'DALOU', with the 'Susse Freres Paris' stamp and inscribed 'Cire Perdue', 11cm high This figure was originally conceived as part of the 'Workers Monument' (Monument aux Travailleurs) on which Dalou worked intermittently from 1889 until 1902. The clay models for this monument (that was never executed) depicting a line-up of workers representing all categories of manual labour, are preserved at the Petit Palace, Musee des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris. Dalou first contracted the Susse Freres foundry in 1899 to cast his bronzes. After his death this contract was renewed by his daughter Georgette to include models such as those for the Monument aux Travailleurs that had been found in the sculptor's atelier. £1,000-£1,500

AFTER AIME-JULES DALOU (FRENCH, 1838-1902): A BRONZE FIGURE OF A NUDE 'DESESPOIR' (DESPAIR) mid brown patination, seated on a rocky, naturalistic base, 19.5cm high This figure was cast from a model conceived by Dalou in connection with a monument to the French statesman Leon Gambetta, where it was intended to be placed to the left of the central pedestal. The monument was completed in 1904, two years after Dalou's death, by his pupil Camille Lefevre, and erected in Bordeaux in 1905 (demolished 1961); by then Lefevre had substituted the figures at the foot of the monument to those alluding to the suffering of the Parisian citizens during the siege of Paris in 1781 by sculptures of his own design. £600-£800

He was one of the best known French sculptors of the later 19th century, partially owing to his prolific output, but also due to his meticulously detailed renderings.
