A RARE 18TH CENTURY GOLD TOPPED CANE. By William Collins, London, circa 1749. The crown of the gold mushroom shaped knop is chased and engraved with crest and motto. The sides decorated with scenes of a Commedia del' Arte 'The doctor catching his daughter with a suitor', all within a colonnade, signed W. Collins Ft., on a malacca shaft that has 'rope' twist braid and brass ferrule. Sold at Bonhams 2014 with this foot note: The crest is that of Compton of Gloucestershire, Richard Edgecombe has identified the inspiration for the scene as an engraving by Charles - Nicolas Cochin after Antoine Wattea 'Pour garder l'honneur dune belle' circa 1725 (for more on the life of William Collins see 'The Art of the Gold Chaser in Eighteenth Century London' (Oxford 2000, page 40). £2,800-£4,000
