VI Naval officer's bicorn hat by Gieves Ltd of 21 Old Bond Street, London, together with a matching pair of gold braid epaulettes, cased plume and sword belt, housed in a red velvet lined fitted tin case, named to the lid J.M.G. Waldegrave, with remains of paper label naming Hon J. Waldegrave Lt Commander, 1941.John Montagu Granville Waldegrave. DSC (29th August 1905 - 18th February 1944) was a British Naval Commander during WWII.Waldegrave was the eldest son of the 5th Baron Radstock. He commanded the cruiser HMS Vindictive 1938-39, and the sloop HMS Puffin in 1939. It was whilst commanding the Puffin that he was awarded the Distinguished Service cross for anti-submarine work. Waldegrave went on to command HMS Windsor and HMS Punjabi before being assigned to the cruiser HMS Penelope as executive officer in September 1943. On the 18th of February 1944, Penelope was torpedoed by U-410 while returning from Anzio and Commander Waldegrave was lost with the ship.He left behind his wife Lady Hersey Boyle and two young daughters, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Having no male heirs, the barony of Radstock became extinct upon the 5th baron's death in 1953. £250 - 400
