Late Qing Dynasty, Guangxu era, 1894.
Of compressed circular form, on a tall foot, each side decorated between cicada-and-ring handles, one side with a landscape scene depicting a scholar and attendant crossing a bridge, and the reverse with an inscription quoting from a rhapsody (fu) by Lü Dongbin on a gathering of immortals, followed by '[Executed by] Jingyi jushi, jiaping month of the year of Jiawu' [1894], the base with apocryphal Qianlong mark, the gold stopper and spoon with inset jade top, the collar with a continuous scene of a dragon and phoenix, indistinct impressed mark to the spoon, 7cm H.

Literature: Wu Xijiu (alias Wu Mengling) was a native of the Tianjin, well-known painter in Beijing during his prime, as a glass engraver and painter. Gai Qi (1774-1829) was a Shanghai-based artist active under the reign of the Kangxi Emperor, famed for his contribution to the genre of beauty painting. A number of works by the artist, with single or small groups of ladies may be found in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing. The present work contains the seal, hong yushan fang zhencang, of the famed Qing Dynasty collector and connoisseur Guo Baicang (1815 - 1890).

Yu Zhiding (1647-1716) was a Yangzhou-based painter and worked for a time at the Imperial Painting Academy. Specialising in portraits, his works are also represented in the Palace Museum collection in Beijing. The present painting depicts a scene from the story of Bole, who under the direction of Emperor Chu of the Spring and Autumn period, located a lowly pack-horse for the Emperor's use, which despite the Emperor's initial reservations, was ultimately acknowledged to be an outstanding find from an unlikely source.
