NB: The importance of this carriage is that it was of the first British patented safety landau baby carriage made in Britain. It predates Wilsons of Guiseley and Millsons and Sol prams who were inspired by the makers design and carving- which was a new innovation and a whole new style of baby carriage, high off the floor for walking in central parks. Perambulators at this time from 1875 were a status piece in cities as an indicator of wealth and the ownership of an enclosed private central garden in a residential square or large park-walking down normal filthy streets was not an option on cobbles and horse dirt at that time!

Whitby Limited (Nottingham, England) Victorian perambulator safety landau baby carriage, 1875, on metal springs, the first to be made in the UK and patented. As a balanced carriage it had the unique additional safety seat/back rest for a second child to be carried within the pram. The wooden carved and panelled pram was a laborious and skilful process carried out by a cabinet maker and became a fashionable item in the great parks of London. Incredibly expensively made and appointed in leather and twisted brass, they were supplied to nobility and aristocracy in the day. The original show card from the showroom (this was the showroom model) is still with the item. Condition: has wear to the hood commensurate with age and all else is Excellent for 130 years and is engineered to a very high spec as the sample model. £1500-£2000
