"Mistletoe Manor", large wooden dolls house, late 1890s, twelve rooms and staircase on two storeys, plus attic, opens at front- also open at rear. In Tudor style; 41.5"/105cm tall x 55"/140cm wide x 27"/69cm deep. Old engraving of Roebuck Inn, Leek also included. The house comes with its own low table. It also has a set of framed perspex walls which replace the removable back wall and three front wall section, for viewing purposes. Provenance: Edith Wardle, born 1873, was one of eleven children of Sir Thomas Wardle. (Sir Thomas Wardle knew William Morris; he was also commissioned by Queen Victoria to enquire into the diseases of silkworms in India). The Wardle family lived at Spout Hall in St Edwards Street, Leek Staffordshire. In the late 1890s Edith commissioned Mr Walwyn, a cabinet maker in Leek, to make Mistletoe Manor. It is possibly an adaptation of the Roebuck Inn, Leek or of Spout Hall. In 1904 Edith married Mr Underhill and left Leek for Scotland. Mistletoe Manor was lent to various cousins including Valentine Worthington (a second cousin) of Leek. In 1920, Dorothy Wardle, now married to an Oxford don named Kelsey, regained possession of the doll's house, painted and papered it and made various items of furniture and redressed the six original dolls. She and her husband had no family and enjoyed restoring and tending it. After her husband's death she later remarried and moved to Saunton Court near Barnstable where the Manor was often shown for charitable purposes. It remained in her possession until her death in 1960. Her husband gave it to Joan Noad (nee Underhill - daughter of Edith) in the 1960s. It again passed between various cousins and then sat in a barn for two years near Johnstone in Scotland before being bought (empty) in 1970 for £30, by Helen Mackinnon who completely renovated and furnished it. Seven years later, Mrs Mackinnon was offered and bought all the original contents. The house now contains a mixture of original, period and reproduction furnishings along with handcrafted items by Mrs Mackinnon, her family and friends who all contributed to the restoration of this wonderful house. Deirdre Mackinnon £100-£200
