Click to view full image... Victoria Cross recommended 1854 Crimea Medal 4 clasps Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol officially impressed to Robt Sandys 68th Regt good very fine. With typed research, VC recommendation vouched by Captn Hamilton and Cpl Dempsey for action in Trenches before Sebastopol - "Private Robert Sandys on 11th May 1855 during a heavy sortie, mounted the parapet of the trench and fired upon the enemy - continuing in that exposed position until a call was made for volunteers to charge the enemy out of the trench on their out flanking the party defending it - volunteering his services and was wounded on this occasion." The recommendation was not approved. In Faithful the Story of the DLI by Ward, he records more detail of the action, "Capt Hamilton collecting a party of volunteers including Sgt Sladden, Cpl Gilnane and Privates Cormick, Fitzpatrick, Sales, Smith and Sandys, boldly charged them and drove them out with the bayonet. Killing both of the Russian officers and several of the men. This gallant action earned Capt Hamilton the Victoria Cross. Cost the Regiment one officer and nine men killed or mortally wounded, eighteen NCOs and men wounded and one missing." Capt Hamilton's citation reads "For having on the night of the 11th May 1855, during a most determined sortie, boldly charged the enemy with a small force from a battery, of which they had obtained possession in great numbers, thereby saving the works from falling into the hands of the enemy. He was conspicuous on this occasion for gallantry and daring conduct." Pte John Byrne was also awarded the VC in this action. The casualty roll published in London Gazette lists him as severely wounded 11/5/55, Hayward's published casualty list records him as died of wounds but this does not appear to be correct. Rolls are inconclusive to whether he was awarded 4 clasps. (See photo) (R) £1000
