Click to view full image...Click to view full image... WWI Military Cross and BWM to A.Capt G.R. Rochester (MC un-named as issued) extremely fine. George Harvey Rochester died of wounds serving with 54th Bn Canadian Infantry on 28th September 1918 and is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St Marc. His MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd November 1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and resource in leading his platoon, which was on the extreme right of the corps attack. He worked his men forward section by section in face of very heavy fire for several hundred yards, personally seeing that every advantage was taken of cover. He then led the final rush, capturing the front and three machine guns. The manner in which he handled the advance, showing a total disregard of danger himself, saved many casualties." With a good qty of copied research, he was born 9/1/95 in Prince Albert, enlisted 21/8/16, MC most likely for the Battle of Amiens with War Diary extract "Two platoons under Lt G.H. Rochester and Lt Birmingham advanced in extended order in the attack on their objective…. They were met by very heavy and concentrated fire from enemy machine guns in front and on both flanks, and, as the ground over which they were advancing was absolutely devoid of cover, the rate of advance slowed down somewhat. Both platoon commanders had their men well in hand and with great coolness commenced working forward section by section under their own covering L.G. and rifle fire until their objective was reached. Lt Birmingham was mortally wounded. Lt Rochester thereupon took over command of both platoons and organized a defensive line which was maintained under very heavy fire MG fire and artillery fire. Special mention of the names of Lts Rochester and Birmingham should be made. They exposed themselves time and again in steadying and encouraging their men and to their courage and coolness was due in a large measure, the success of the operation." He was promoted A/Capt in September. "On the night of 27th September 1918, he was leading his company in an attack on a machine gun nest that had been doing considerable damage. The operation was near completion, he having reached within 25 yards of the objective when he received a machine gun bullet through his abdomen. He was speedily removed to No 38 CCS where he died the following day." (See photo) (R) £600
