In 19th Century Paris, the corpses of people drowned in the Seine were displayed to the public in order to be identified. In the 1880's there was one particular body. She was dragged from the Seine with not a scratch or spot. Suicide they said. The body was presented behind a window and the people peered at the restful smile which sat across the features. She was never identified. An unknown pathologist had been so taken by the beauty that they decided to immortalise her. A plaster cast mould of the face was taken and a death mask made, an object to preserve the image of one deceased. Through odd contrivances and circumstances now lost to time the mask got out and garnered a following. The face became famous.
L'Inconnue de la Seine they called her, meaning 'the unknown woman of the Seine.' Somehow copies were made of the mask and then more were desired. Photographs of the original were taken and masks made based upon the film negatives By the 1900's factories in Germany and France were producing volumes of the corpse's countenance. In 1960 her death mask was used as the model for the first resuscitation doll 'Resusci Anne', also known as 'CPR Annie' in<@$> the US. £40 - 60

Click to view full image... A Victorian oak carved panel of arched shape releif carved with Gaius Mucius Scaevola, 60cm x 100cm wide, late 19th Century
This depicts Gaius Mucius Scaevola, a Roman youth mentioned in Livy, who was famous for his bravery.
In 508 BC, during the war between Rome and Clusium, the Clusian king Lars Porsena laid siege to Rome. Mucius, with the approval of the Roman Senate snuck into the Etruscan camp and attempted to murder Porsena. There were two similarly dressed people on a raised platform talking to the troops. He misidentified Porsena and killed Porsena's scribe instead. Mucius was captured, and famously declared to Porsena: "I am Gaius Mucius, a citizen of Rome. I came here as an enemy to kill my enemy, and I am as ready to die as I am to kill. We Romans act bravely and, when adversity strikes, we suffer bravely."
"Watch," he declared, "so that you know how cheap the body is to men who have their eye on great glory." Mucius thrust his right hand into a fire which was lit for sacrifice and held it there without giving any indication of pain, thereby earning for himself and his descendants the cognomen Scaevola, meaning 'left-handed'. Porsena, shocked at the youth's bravery, dismissed him from the Etruscan camp, free to return to Rome saying "Go back, since you do more harm to yourself than me". At the same time, the king also sent ambassadors to Rome to offer peace £175 - 225
