Provenance: This work purchased along with two other works from a sale of the artist's studio by Leon Suddaby. Letter of provenance to this effect sold with this painting. Valued for Insurance by Leon Suddaby, 14th April 1989 and sold by Roseberys, 9th December 2014, where it was incorrectly titled on both occasions.
Note: Mavis Wheeler (1908-1970), former wife of Horace de Vere Cole (1881-1936) and Sir Mortimer Wheeler (1890-1976), was also a mistress of Augustus John, modelling for him after they had met in 1928. She famously shot Anthony Vivian, 5th Baron Vivian (1906-1991) in the stomach at a range of 3 inches on 30th July 1954, resulting in her receiving a jail sentence of six months.
