WWI Military Cross, BWM, Victory Medal, WW2 Defence Medal and QEII Civil Defence Long Service Medal to Lieut M.D. Thomas (MC, Defence and Long Service un-named as issued) very fine to extremely fine. Meredith Dillon Thomas's MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 30th January 1920 earned while serving with 4th Bn Grenadier Guards. With copied Returning Prisoner of War statement which lists him as slightly wounded and captured on 13th April 1918: "On the night of April 11/12 1918 the Battalion went into action N. of MERVILLE and occupied a position a few hundred yards S. of LA COURONNE cross roads where a line was dug facing roughly S.E. During the 12th the enemy made considerable attacks on our left flank, & the Company of which I had assumed command when the Company Commander was wounded early in the morning, was subjected to strong frontal and enfilade fire, the enemy having pushed back the line some distance to our left. On the night of the 12th/13th, the Battalion took up a new position almost at right angles to the previous one and facing towards the original left flank. About 8 a.m. on April 13 the enemy made further attacks supported by very strong rifle & machine gun fire, trench mortar fire & with point blank fire from light field guns to which we replied as long as ammunition lasted. I was wounded slightly in the shoulder & partially buried on several occasions. About 2.30 pm both our flanks were in the air & we were exposed to a double enfilade fire. A few enemy appeared over a slight ridge about 150 yards to my front. We were quite unable to get at them owing to very strong machine gun fire from the flanks. We therefore were forced to keep to the trenches in the hope of delaying the advance as long as possible. About 3 PM the position became no longer tenable. The survivors were captured. I cannot speak too highly of the conduct of Lt P.H. Cox & Sgt Palethorpe & of all the NCOs & men under my command." He was interred in the Officers POW Camp at Karlsruhe. Captain Thomas Tannatt Pryce was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his bravery in this battle on 13th April. <\n>With original letter confirming award of Civil Defence dated 1961.
