An extremely fine Japanese Meiji period large carved ivory okimono. Formed from one solid piece as a bearded sage dressed in a kimono and a hooded shawl with carved decoration depicting a phoenix to the shoulders and with an inro to his waist. Posed leant contrapposto against an ornament stand with a goblet in his raised right hand and a palm leaf fan in his left hand by his side. Raised on an associated hardwood plinth. Inset lacquer tablet with signature to the base. Ivory 40cm.
