NB: This dress was designed by Norman Hartnel (dressmaker to the Queen) and was available in a choice of colours lemon on white, blue on white, green on white and red on white. N.B. The significance of this pram, being the first Silver Cross pram ever made, by the only British pram manufacturer still in existence from the 19th century, is a rare piece of both social and manufacturing history. It is unrestored, and the only known example from 1878 with the patent still attached. Originally owned from new by an Edinburgh family until c1970, when acquired by a private collector, the pram is being sold to form an ongoing trust to enable the re-publishing of Jack Hampshire's book Prams, Mailcarts and Bassinets (originally published in 1980). |
William Wilson (Hunslett, Leeds) Silver Cross Doll's Perambulator, British, 1877/8, patented by Wilson's (see Base Plate: "WILSON'S PATENT No 5467"), the first to be fitted with a "C" spring, painted wooden body with brown leatherette upholstery, 25"/64cm and 20"/51cm wheels (remains of original rubber tyres also included). Double-ended with moveable hood for either end, suitable for two children or babies. Two of the four leather straps holding the body to the sprung chassis are replaced, otherwise very original.
