* Reinhold Nagele studied under his father, who was a stage painter, and then progressed to the art school in Stuttgart. The Great War interrupted his work but he re-established himself as an active member of the art scene in Stuttgart in 1919. In 1923 he was a co-founder of the Stuttgart Secession and joined the Vereinigung der Freunde schwabischer Grafik [Association of Friends of Swabian Graphic Art], which broke up in 1937 after a dispute concerning Nagele's Jewish faith. Nagele left for the United States with his Jewish wife Alice Nordlinger in 1939 and only returned to his homeland after her death in 1963. Nagele's style was often faux-naif but he favoured a meticulous technique that belied his apparently simple subject matter. He was skilled at suggesting gradations of space with subtle variations of colour.
