Mark Senior NPS (1862-1927)Figures before the artist's cottage, Runswick BaySigned and dated (18)93, oil on canvas, 49cm by 34.5cmThis composition shows two ladies conversing at the end of what was locally known as "The Cockpit", before the artist's cottage (Pear Tree Cottage) and the adjoining cottage known as Fuchsia Cottage, which was occupied by the Clark family operating in the fishing business within the area. This occupation is illustrated by the nets and other accoutrements seen hanging on the fence on the right hand side. The curved wall, which can be seen on the left hand side of the painting, served as a boundary for the Village Institute, which was built by the villagers and performed a vital function within the community. It is highly likely that the figures which feature in this work are members of the Senior family and or the Clark family respectively. £7000 - 9000
