Important Imperial Chinese carved Zitan Scholars' box and cover - Qing Dynasty and believed 18th century, of rectangular form with rounded corners, on four short bracket feet. The four sides and cover finely carved in deep relief with figural landscapes depicting deer, cranes and elderly sages engaged in various pursuits beneath pine, paulownia and other trees growing amid a rocky landscape with flowing streams, bridges and walkways, the wood of a rich brown tone with smooth patina - fitted with later hinges, probably in the 19th century and inscribed on underside of cover 'M Dillon Pekin 1850', 21.5cm wide x 13.2cm high x 15cm deep.
